Virtual meeting of the project IDEA - Inspiring Digital Entrepreneurship and Awareness in HE - According to the quality of the digital entrepreneurship system Croatia is at the back of the EU
On Tuesday, May 26, 2020, the second partnership meeting of the IDEA (Inspiring Digital Entrepreneurship and Awareness in HE) project was held. Although originally planned in Pescara, the meeting was held in a virtual environment due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the activities so far, a mapping of the state and trends in digital entrepreneurship has been carried out both in the countries from which the members of the project consortium come and at the level of the European Union. The results, which will be publicly available as a part of a study in the upcoming months, point to a gap between the northern and Baltic countries and the southeastern part of the EU, and to a lack of experts in digitally intensive industries. According to the European Index of Digital Entrepreneurship Systems, Croatia is at the back of the European Union. In the part of the analysis for Croatia, conducted by project members from the University of Dubrovnik, the Institute of Economics, Zagreb and Hrvatski Telekom (Croatian Telecom), the lack of educational programs in the field of digital economy was determined. In this sense, the first doctoral study programme Business Economics in the Digital Environment, which will be initiated by the Department of Economics and Business Economics at the University of Dubrovnik and the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Zagreb in the second half of 2020, stands out. The analysis also pointed to the lack of cooperation between institutions, associations and advisory bodies relevant to the development of digital entrepreneurship. Although in Croatia e-services are used in business in a high percentage, the share of e-commerce in total trade is still low compared to the European Union average.
In the coming months, the IDEA project will develop tools to strengthen students’ digital entrepreneurship skills. All project resources will be publicly available through the project platform, during and after the project implementation.
The IDEA project is co-financed through the Erasmus+ program of the European Commission. It is implemented by a consortium of 9 partners from 7 European countries (Croatia, Belgium, Italy, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Spain). The project coordinator is the Center for Digital Transformation Research - CREDO, Department of Economics and Business Economics, University of Dubrovnik.
