Towards the autumn of the TOURCRO project

The summer of 2023 was marked by the dissemination of the results of the TOURCRO project. Prof. Maruška Vizek, PhD participated in the International Conference on Business Tourism and Management (ICBTMAN - 2023) in San Francisco (USA) on July 14, 2023, and Tajana Barbić, PhD participated in the 25th INFER Annual Conference 2023 in Valencia (Spain) from September 6 to 8, 2023. With the useful feedback they received from foreign colleagues, they continue with the research work on the project.
 

 

Conference on "Impact of tourism on the real estate market: How to make tourism sustainable?" held at EIZ

On Friday, July 7, 2023, at the Institute of Economics, Zagreb, the conference on "Impact of tourism on the real estate market: How to make tourism sustainable?" was held as part of the presentation of results of the scientific research project "Too much of a good thing? The effects of tourism on the housing market in Croatia - TOURCRO", financed by the Croatian Science Foundation.

For almost four years, the research team led by Prof. Maruška Vizek, PhD researched different channels through which tourist activity, seasonality of tourism and the structure of accommodation capacity affect the residential real estate market and the affordability of residential real estate in local self-government units, thereby addressing a very current and very important topic for the Republic of Croatia. As part of the project, five scientific papers have been created so far, four of which have been published in prestigious international scientific journals in the field of tourism.

A short presentation of the most important research results was held by the head of the TOURCRO project, Prof. Maruška Vizek, PhD and the state secretary of the Ministry of Spatial Planning, Construction and State Property, Mr Željko Uhlir, participated in the panel discussion that followed the presentation. Director of the Directorate for Sustainable Development and Competitiveness of Tourist Destinations of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports Slavko Štefičar, Director of the Croatian Association of Tourism Veljko Ostojić, President of the Croatian Association of Family Accommodation Associations Mirko Bulić and Vice Chancellor of the University of Dubrovnik and collaborator on the TOURCRO project Prof. Nebojša Stojčić, PhD participated in the presentation and discussion.

Researchers from EIZ win the best paper award at a conference 

Head of EIZ Tajana Barbić and deputy head Maruška Vizek participated from June 22 to 24, 2023 in Reykyavik (Iceland) at the conference EURA 2023 - The European City: A practice of resilience in the face of an uncertain future at which their paper The Effect of Tourism Activity on Housing Affordibility, co-authored with Josip Mikulić, Nebojša Stojčić, Anita Čeh Časni and James E. Payne, won the best paper award. The paper was written as part of the project "Too much of a good thing? The effects of tourism on the housing market in Croatia - TOURCRO", financed by the Croatian Science Foundation, and was published in one of the best journals dedicated to tourism research, Annals of Tourism Research. Congratulations to the authors!

 


Fourth year, fourth paper (Q1)

We are pleased to inform you that a fourth academic paper as part of the TOURCRO project has been published. This time, the paper has been written by the female part of the project team: Maruška Vizek, PhD, Tajana Barbić, PhD, and Anita Čeh Časni, PhD. The paper titled "The impact of the tourism accommodation composition on housing prices: The case of Croatia" has been published in the journal Tourism Economics (WOS Q1) and can be accessed at this link.

New dissemination TOURCRO tours

We are happy to announce that the results of the TOURCRO project are spreading around the world. Project leader Prof. Maruška Vizek, PhD participated virtually in the 2022 AsRES-AREUEA Joint Conference held in Tokyo (Japan) from August 4 to 7, 2022. In the new year 2023 she presented the paper "Where do you go? The accommodation structure and migration geographies in a tourism-driven economy" at the 2023 Global Business Research Conference in Los Angeles (USA). 


 


Continuation of dissemination of project results

And this year, during June and July,  Maruška Vizek, leader of the project "Too good to be true? The effect of tourism on the real estate market in Croatia - TOURCRO" participated in two conferences where she presented the paper "Spatial spillovers of tourism activity on housing prices: The case of Croatia". The first conference, the 28th Annual Conference of the European Real Estate Society (ERES 2022), was held from June 22 to 25, 2022 in Milan, with our participation online. The second conference at which Maruška Vizek presented, the 14th International Conference on Trade, Business, Economics and Law, took place from July 18 to 20, 2022 in Vancouver (Canada), and thus our project visited another continent.

Another paper published as part of the TOURCRO project

After two extremely successful published papers created as part of the TOURCRO project, which were discussed in previous publications, we welcomed the publication of the third one. The paper "Spatial spillovers of tourism activity on housing prices: The case of Croatia" was published in the journal Tourism Economics (WOS Q1) and can be accessed via this link.

TOURCRO project articles attain significant interest


Tourism Management, one of the top three journals in tourism research (WOS factor 10.967, ABS 4*), published an article of our research team working on the project “TOURCRO - Too much of a good thing? The effects of tourism on the housing market in Croatia”.

The article titled “High season, low growth: The impact of tourism seasonality and vulnerability to tourism on the emergence of high-growth firms” analyzes the effects of tourism on the emergence of high-growth firms in Croatian municipalities. Maruška Vizek, the project lead, has dedicated a comment on the subject in EIZ komentar (in Croatian).

“The effect of tourism activity on housing affordability”, a previous research paper of the TOURCRO project team, was published in the prestigious Annals of Tourism Research, which has already been announced. Till today, the paper on the impact of tourism activity on housing prices in Croatia is reported to be one of the most downloaded articles of this journal, according to the Croatian Science Foundation.
 



 


TOURCRO in Madrid

After a successful summer season of conferences, Maruška Vizek, project lead continued to promote the project results by participating in the international conference in Madrid (International Conference on Regional Science, 24.11.2021 - 26.11.2021) where she presented the paper "Spatial spillovers of tourism activity on housing markets: The case of Croatia" as part of the project "Too good to be true? The effect of tourism on the real estate market in Croatia - TOURCRO".

We hope to publish the paper soon and wish the whole team a lot of success and live conferences!


Article on the effects of tourism on housing affordability in Croatia published in Annals of Tourism Research


How does tourism activity impact housing prices in Croatia? This, among other issues, was part of the research that our project team worked on in their article “Too much of a good thing? The effects of tourism on the housing market in Croatia - TOURCRO.” The research was published in Annals of Tourism Research (Q1), one of the leading academic journals focusing on tourism. ​The season of conferences within the TOURCRO project has started

The project lead, Maruška Vizek presented works in progress as well as those already created as part of the TOURCRO project at three conferences during June and July 2021 (27th Annual Conference of the European Real Estate Society (ERES 2021), EcoMod2021 - International Conference on Economic Modeling and Data Science, AsRES-GCREC-AREUEA Joint International Real Estate Conference). It is about two works: "The effect of tourism activity on housing affordability" and "Spatial spillovers of tourism activity on housing markets: The case of Croatia".

Implementation of the project "Too much of a good thing? The effects of tourism on the housing market in Croatia - TOURCRO" started on February 3, 2020. 

The project is financed by Croatian Science Foundation within the call "Research projects, deadline IP-2019-04", and the project will run until February 2, 2024.
